Asia's 50 Best Restaurants 2021 winners announced
The Chairman in Hong Kong has been crowned The Best Restaurant in Asia on March 25, during Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2021, sponsored by Acqua Panna and S.Pellegrino.
Chef Julian Royer’s restaurant, Odette in Singapore fell to number two after two years in the top, while Den in Tokyo by Chef Zaiyu Hasegawa won the 3rd place prize.
This year’s awards ceremony, held virtually via live broadcast on the Asia's 50 Best dedicated Facebook page and 50 Best Restaurants TV YouTube channel, aimed at uniting the Asia’s world of gastronomy together, showing support for the work of chefs, restaurateurs, and journalists, and giving recognition to their talent.
Asia’s 50 Best Special Awards
The event has also revealed a series of new awards that recognize the effort Asia’s chefs put into culinary industry during the last year. Here are some of the key ones.
Opened in 2016 by South Korean-born chef Sun Kim, Meta restaurant in Singapore was identified as the rising star of the region and won the American Express One to Watch Award 2021.
The Inedit Damm Chefs' Choice Award, voted on by all chefs on the list, went to Mingoo Kang of Mingles in Seoul. The restaurant was also crowned The Best Restaurant in Korea for five consecutive years.
The recipient of Asia’s Best Female Chef 2021 award, voted for by over 300 industry experts from across the region and sponsored by Cinco Jotas, was DeAille Tam, executive chef and co-founder of Obscura in Shanghai.
Supinya Junsuta, Bangkok’s street food queen and the owner of famed Thai food open-air shophouse Jay Fai, won the Icon Award - Asia 2021.
To further support local restaurant industry, Acqua Panna and S.Pellegrino have collaborated with Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants to launch Essence of Asia, a special list of unranked restaurants. The collection gives recognition to local hero-restaurants that represent the culinary traditions of the continent best.
